 ● Faces of Art ... Anyone who's been to Fort Lauderdale's F.A.T. Village Arts District on the last Saturday of the month, has seen the faces of the many Broward artists who exhibit there. If all goes according to plan, visitors to the art district's monthly art walk will eventually encounter even more local artist's faces, and their stories on a much grander scale. We're talking big faces, in black-and-white, all over the outside walls of F.A.T. Village.

Faces of Art is the first planned installment of Inside Out/Fort Lauderdale. The recently launched project is modeled after Inside Out Project, which a French street artist known as JR, launched after being awarded a 2011 TED Prize. (See his talk about the project in the video above).

A project to expose the persecution of minorities in Pakistan.
JR's plan was to create a large-scale participatory art project in which digitally uploaded black-and-white portraits would be transformed into posters plastered over walls, windows, streets or buildings etc. in diverse communities and documented online. JR's project, according to Kristina DaSilva, group action leader of Inside Out Project/Fort Lauderdale, has since been independently carried out by groups of people worldwide who are passionate about standing up for things they care about.

In Kabul, Afghanistan, a 200-portrait project was launched to show that hope for happiness and a peaceful future lies beyond the sorrow. Another exhibit in Caracas, Venezuela included 220 portraits of mothers who lost children because of violence. People in Austin, Minnesota countered the challenges of teaching amid school budget cuts and increasingly high drop out-rates with a 152-portrait project that honors those who devote their lives to educating children.

"Our group's first action will be a tribute to artists, by artists," DaSilva notes of the Fort Lauderdale-based project. "I'm currently working with the curators of F.A.T. Village to engage the local creative community in all aspects of the project. We're aiming for the exhibit to open in late summer/early fall, but the project is in its beginning stages, so the timeline isn't solid just yet."

Their goal, over the next few months, is twofold. Organizers, through their public call to Broward County artists, will solicit black-and-white portraits from "painters, photographers, tattoo artists, dancers, actors, poets, sculptors and any other artist you can imagine," along with statements about why they create art and what inspires them. The other goal is to raise the money needed to print photos in large format and hang them on the outside walls of FAT Village.

Submitted portraits (no watermarks please) should clearly capture the subject’s face. As noted in the call to artists, "The best portraits are expressive, emotional, and captivating. They are more than pictures of smiling faces; they seem to reflect the personality and story behind the face. An ideal portrait will have no clutter or background distractions." (More submission guidelines can be found at Insideoutfortlauderdale.tumblr.com.)

"As a way of connecting artists to one another and of connecting the public to local artists, Inside Out Fort Lauderdale will share the images and personal statements on our Facebook, Instagram and Twitter feeds," DaSilva explains. "As photos are submitted, our group action organizers will be looking for a diverse group of artists to invite back to be photographed [by Inside Out Fort Lauderdale's group action photographers] for the large-scale exhibit. Because we will be working with space constraints and don't know how many submissions we'll receive, we can't guarantee that every artist who submits an image will be included in the exhibit, but everyone will be included in the social media campaign."

The project is intentionally not designed on a first-come, first-serve basis, because organizers want the exhibition to reflect the diversity of the creative community. "If many of the initial entries represent several artists from similar disciplines, we won't achieve the level of diversity that we're looking for," DaSilva says.

"Our hope is that people continue to use the project to share their images and spread their stories of artistic inspiration," DaSilva continues.  "In fact, if all goes well, Inside Out/Fort Lauderdale's Faces of Art will inspire someone else to become a group action leader and create "Faces of [insert awesome social statement here]" and a whole new set of beautiful faces can be shared with the world."

The Think Tank, a brainstorming session for people who want to collectively come up with ideas to invigorate the local art scene, will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. May 23 at Boynton Beach Art District, 422 W. Industrial Ave., Boynton Beach. Call 561-684-7036, e-mail Craig@jerrysartarama.com or visit Westpalm.jerrysartaramastores.com.

Florida artists are invited to submit their "qualifications for competing to design, fabricate and install a passenger shelter, bike rack and two benches to be located in the City of Seminole." Total budget is $50,000. Deadline for submission is June 3.

Here's an opportunity for artists who love taking pics of their pets ... Frames USA & Art Gallery is holding Miami's Cutest Pet Photo Contest, which organizers note will result in $1000 worth of custom framing.  Entries will be accepted through June. Photos should be submitted to Framesusacontest@gmail.com.

  15. Thanks so much Colleen for your efforts. A few years ago I had a solo show at St. Thomas University in Miami Gardens. As a NC artist I wanted to do my best to get the word out about the show and to seek out other opportunities in the area. I wished I had managed to find your blog in advance of the show. I had a hard time finding comprehensive South FL art blogs to notify about the show and to find others involved in the visual art community to network with. Arterpillar is exactly what I was looking for! Keep up the fantastic work. Please add me to your email contacts list: destry3334me@hotmail.com Keep it Creative, Destry
