Local spotlight: Ruben Ubiera

Don't ask artist Ruben Ubiera what he's been up to unless you've got a lot of time.

Last month, he exhibited in "The Takeover," a one-night show in Miami's Wynwood Art District, and now has work in the All Florida Juried Competition and Exhibition at Boca Raton Museum of Art and "The Sincerity Project" at Studio 18 in Pembroke Pines. The artist, recently named best street artist by Miami New Times, is also hard at work on "The Community," a public art project he's doing with the city of Pembroke Pines.

"I've been competing in everything I can get my hands in, and so far it's been doing good for me," says the Dominican-born artist.

This is how things have been progressing since 2008, when Ubiera got laid off from his creative director job at an ad agency and decided to heed the advice of his late mother, who'd always encouraged him to push ahead with the art that was more personal to him.
