Hindsight: The Red Eye

After debating for much of the week whether to check out a couple of shows I really wanted to see in Wynwood or stay in Broward for Red Eye 2012. I chose the latter and checked out the Red Eye at Fort Laucderdale's ArtServe on Saturday night.

Despite the addition of a VIP room (and VIP parking that created much confusion for many), the show had a very relaxed vibe, with people chatting, checking out art and drinking Red Bulls and Dirty Shirleys (the Red Eye's signature cocktail) while artists got creative with their canvases on the front lawn where spray cans were scattered about.

Todd Brittingham's "Chuck" is on exhibit at Red Eye 2012.
The event also featured drumming, body painting, spoken word performances and a hard-working fire twirler in the parking lot where people were munching on grilled cheese sandwiches. There was also a fashion show, a film festival and musical performances (many of which I sadly missed because I didn't realize until too late that they were playing indoors rather than in the parking lot) ... and a raffle of some of last year's Can to Canvas works.

With so many mini-event events packed into this space, and all of them happening at once. I couldn't help but wonder if it might be nice to spread them out since the works remain on display for most of the month. Maybe a film fest one night, a spoken word festival on another etc., so that each element could get a little more of the attention it deserves.

But the event was a fun night out and as as we drove past the front of the library on the way out, I thought how nice it was to see ArtServe crawling with people, all out for a night of music, art, fashion and films.

I took a bunch of pics which are in the slide show above. Expand by clicking the lower right hand corner and then click on show info (at top) for titles  ... or just view the Flickr set. A few of the pics are missing artist details, so if you see one you recognize let me know so I can add. Thanks a bunch.
