Local artist spotlight: Alfred Phillips

"The Big Puddle" by Alfred Phillips
Alfred Phillips likes puddles. They appear in six of the 10 works in "Urban Grit," his new series inspired by the alleys, railroad tracks and streets around his F.A.T. Village studio.

"I love my puddle paintings," he says. "Some people can do flowers. I just happen to be able to do puddles.

"I like being in the city, and I like the architecture and the things that happen with light when it hits buildings and puddles," Phillips adds. "So I'll go out after a rain, when the sun is shining and the water sparkling, and I'll take photos."

Phillips will include paintings based on these images in "Dwellings," a group show opening May 4 at Artist's Eye Fine Art Gallery in Dania Beach. .... Find the rest of my story in Sun-Sentinel's Lifestyle section.
