This is where the unfortunate location of birth often condemns people to a life of struggle in an unforgiving land, beset with drought and flood, famine and tempest." | From Samantha Salzinger's video, Ascension |
117 N.E. Second St., Fort Lauderdale (Hours are 1-5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday), 954-828-9151, Girlsclubcollection.org
Chick Flicks, held the last Saturday of each month, features screenings of films and documentaries that "spotlight cinematic treatments of female photographers." Each month, the featured film is preceded by a short video by a local artist.
This month it's Ascension, artist Samantha Salzinger's video that explores "artifice and reality" in a video that offers what appears to be clouds and sunrise, but is actually a hand-built work created on a table that's seven feet long. After her video comes The Woodmans, the 2010 film selected best New York documentary at Tribeca Film Festival. Directed by former ABC News producer C. Scott Willis, it takes viewers into the lives of Betty and George Woodman, artists whose daughter, photographer Francesca Woodman, committed suicide in 1981.
The 22-year-old photographer left behind five years of black-and-white images, experimental videos and writings, many of which are featured in what Tribeca Film Festival calls "an incisive portrait of a family broken and then healed by its art." The film, which includes interviews with Francesca's parents and her brother, electronic artist Charles Woodman, starts at 7 p.m. Feb. 25 (during F.A.T. Village Art Walk) and the $5 suggested donation includes drinks and snacks.
